Small Hotels in Belize

Just back from Belize and even more impressed that this is the way the Caribbean should be. The largest hotel we saw was 50 rooms, with no big ‘flagged’ chain hotels in sight. Let’s hope that Belize can resist the overdevelopment that has ruined so much of the traditional Caribbean islands and that Belize can keep the charm and low-density development that could be its biggest asset for decades to come…  Don’t expect high service levels or the latest amenities – but if you like friendly, laid-back service and a respect for the environment that has been forgotten in most places – Belize may be the perfect place to fine a great Small Caribbean Hotel.

Note: if you do need certain amenities that travelers take for granted nowadays, contact your hotel prior to booking. Wi-Fi, internet, TV, telephones and even air conditioning may not be standard. If you can’t live without – make sure you check!

The Great House – Belize City

belize-greatThis Belizean landmark was built in 1927 by talented local craftsmen and still retains its beauty, grace and charm. Now, this magnificent four-story colonial style residence is probably the largest classic wooden home still in existence in Belize. Spacious verandahs at the front and back of the house allow you to relax and let go amidst soothing Caribbean breezes.

Only 100 meters from the Caribbean Sea, 12 miles from the barrier reef, 25 miles from the sites of the Mayan Civilization, and a 10 minute walk from the city center (Directly across the street from the Radisson Hotel).
